Patrick Murphy Actually Does The Right Thing

I was not shocked to see that Patrick Murphy, our accidentally elected Representative in Congress, accidentally stumbled upon doing the right thing and voted for the financial rescue package.  After all, Li’l Pat always does what his puppet master Nancy Pelosi tells him to do.  Leadership and free thought are not in his DNA.

I was also not shocked to read his unsurprisingly shallow assessment of the situation afterward.

Obama’s ACORN Organized Us Straight Into Credit Crisis

Obama’s community organizer colleagues in the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) have organized us right into the current financial crisis by using frivolous lawsuits and strong-arm tactics to force lenders into making sub-prime loans and Fannie Mae to buy up the bad loans.

And, in return for ACORN’s hard work toward crushing our economy by forcing you to support those living beyond their means, the Obama campaign has paid the radical organization nearly a million dollars and Congressional Democrats attempted to write an ACORN slush fund into the financial bailout legislation.

Family Asked Obama Not to Use Bracelet As Campaign Prop

In what was perhaps the most memorable moment of the first Presidential debate between John McCain and Barack Obama, Obama felt the need to chime in like a child after McCain pointed out a bracelet given to him by the family of a slain American soldier.

“I’ve got a bracelet, too,” Obama whined.  After a few uncomfortable moments staring down at the bracelet, Obama was able to “remember” the soldier’s name: Ryan Jopek.

What Obama didn’t mention, however, is that the family of Ryan Jopek had asked Obama in writing to stop wearing the bracelet on the campaign trail several months before the debate.  They are mortified that their gesture is being used as a political prop by the shameless politician.

Politico: Deal

Politico is reporting that a financial market rescue package deal has been reached.

Republican Whip Roy Blunt, the chief negotiator for House Republicans, said he was “looking forward to what we’re going to see on paper” and was optimistic that it would be something House Republicans could support.

Said Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson:  “We’ve been working very hard on this and we’ve made great progress toward a deal which will work and will be effective in the marketplace and effective for all Americans . . . .We’ve still got a lot to do to finalize it, but I think we’re there.”

The plan would likely give Paulson a relatively free hand accessing the first $350 billion of the $700 billion he sought. It was not clear when the remaining $350 billion would become available, but Treasury apparently agreed that a future Congress could block its release though a joint resolution signed by the president.

Reports indicate a vote could take place as soon as Monday.

Missouri Governor: Obama Conspiring to Violate Civil Rights

The Governor of Missouri has issued a statement regarding an alleged conspiracy between Presidential candidate Barack Obama and several Missouri Democrats including Senator Claire McCaskill to abuse law enforcement as a means to intimidate critics and violate their civil rights.

JEFFERSON CITY – Gov. Matt Blunt today issued the following statement on news reports that have exposed plans by U.S. Senator Barack Obama to use Missouri law enforcement to threaten and intimidate his critics.

“St. Louis County Circuit Attorney Bob McCulloch, St. Louis City Circuit Attorney Jennifer Joyce, Jefferson County Sheriff Glenn Boyer, and Obama and the leader of his Missouri campaign Senator Claire McCaskill have attached the stench of police state tactics to the Obama-Biden campaign.

“What Senator Obama and his helpers are doing is scandalous beyond words, the party that claims to be the party of Thomas Jefferson is abusing the justice system and offices of public trust to silence political criticism with threats of prosecution and criminal punishment.

“This abuse of the law for intimidation insults the most sacred principles and ideals of Jefferson. I can think of nothing more offensive to Jefferson’s thinking than using the power of the state to deprive Americans of their civil rights. The only conceivable purpose of Messrs. McCulloch, Obama and the others is to frighten people away from expressing themselves, to chill free and open debate, to suppress support and donations to conservative organizations targeted by this anti-civil rights, to strangle criticism of Mr. Obama, to suppress ads about his support of higher taxes, and to choke out criticism on television, radio, the Internet, blogs, e-mail and daily conversation about the election.

“Barack Obama needs to grow up. Leftist blogs and others in the press constantly say false things about me and my family. Usually, we ignore false and scurrilous accusations because the purveyors have no credibility. When necessary, we refute them. Enlisting Missouri law enforcement to intimidate people and kill free debate is reminiscent of the Sedition Acts – not a free society.

For those who missed it, here’s what Governor Blunt is talking about: The “Obama Truth Squad,” a chilling Gestapo squad of St. Louis Law enforcement types threatening to send people to jail for speaking out about Obama.

Debate One: Pah-Kee-Stahn

My debate methodology is a little different than other sites I read. I don’t sit there with notes or live blog every question and answer.  There’s a place for that, but it’s not this place.  Minutiae is fun for people that follow this thing day in and day out, but it’s kind of a drag for those who don’t.

What I do is sit there like I know nothing about “57 states” or “Iran is a tiny county and not a serious threat.”  I take it all in.  I take in the reaction, too.  And I try to discern what the short attention span crowd could possibly have taken away from it all.

In my mind, Barack Obama lost this debate — both parts of it — and lost it badly.  And I say that while conceding that, if this was a high school debate club meet, he would likely have scored quite a few points.  But it’s not.  It’s a debate of impressions, and Barack Obama made a lousy impression.
