Thank A ‘Greedy’ Drug Company: AIDS Baby ‘Cured’

Doctors in Mississippi appear to have ‘cured’ an HIV positive infant with aggressive treatment just 30 hours after birth.

The child is now two-and-a-half.

Thank an evil, greedy multi-national drug company or three.

Remember, though, only the painfully stupid can be found in America’s rural south.  Just ask an elitist big northern city liberal. Nothing of worth there, just a bunch of backwards, racist, fundamentalist, ignorant, toothless cousin humpers who ruin the country by electing conservatives to stand in the way of government largesse.

The baby, born in rural Mississippi, was treated aggressively with antiretroviral drugs starting around 30 hours after birth, something that is not usually done. If further study shows this works in other babies, it will almost certainly be recommended globally.

One hypothesis is that the drugs killed off the virus before it could establish a hidden reservoir in the baby. One reason people cannot be cured now is that the virus hides in a dormant state, out of reach of existing drugs. When drug therapy is stopped, the virus can emerge from hiding.

When is a cure not a cure?

“The one uncertainty is really definitive evidence that the child was indeed infected,” said Dr. Daniel R. Kuritzkes, chief of infectious diseases at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.

Sounds like sour grapes to me.  So sorry you couldn’t cure AIDS, big powerful Dr. Kuritzkes.  Better luck next time.

Nice big corner office you got here, Kuritzkes.  Cure AIDS in it today?

According to Twitchy

The three drugs that were used to treat the toddler with AIDS — zidovudine, lamivudine and nevirapine — were…ushered through clinical trials and brought to market by biotechnology/pharmaceutical companies like Burroughs-Wellcome (now GlaxoSmithKline), Biochem Pharma (now Shire Pharmaceuticals), and Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals.
