An unnamed administration official has debunked a story about Sunday’s assassination of al Qaeda figurehead Osama bin Laden told by Obama counter-terrorism adviser John Brennan during a Monday briefing.
John Brennan, President Barack Obama’s top counter- terrorism adviser, told reporters earlier that the slain woman had been one of bin Laden’s wives and had been used — perhaps voluntarily — as a shield during the firefight.
However, a different White House official said that account had turned out not to be the case. Bin Laden’s wife was injured but not killed in the assault.
Considering Brennan was sitting there watching the raid with the rest of the bureaucrats, I’m not sure how he could get such a basic detail wrong accidentally. Shouldn’t the head counter-terrorism adviser – you know – kind of pay attention during the biggest terror raid of all time?
The administration has been filling the airwaves with self-aggrandizement about the raid in northern Pakistan since news of bin Laden’s death broke late Sunday evening. Obama thinks nothing of stealing the credit from the heroes of the US military and intelligence community who have been working tirelessly to bring bin Laden to justice for a decade, mainly despite obstacles Obama himself and his ilk have thrown in their way.
Obama is planning a tasteless victory lap a Ground Zero on Thursday.
However, during a background, off-camera briefing for television reporters later Monday, a senior White House official said bin Laden was not armed when he was killed, apparently by the U.S. raid team.
Another White House official familiar with the TV briefing confirmed the change to POLITICO, adding, “I’m not aware of him having a weapon.”
“The bottom line is the team that entered that room was met with resistance and took appropriate action,” said a third American official.
The White House on Monday night declined to elaborate on the nature of the resistance bin Laden allegedly put up. However, an official confirmed that the Al Qaeda founder was shot twice, once in the head and once in the chest.
Another official familiar with the operation said it did not appear that any woman was used as a human shield, but that the woman killed and the one injured were hurt in the crossfire.
We’re all glad he’s dead, and that’s the appropriate outcome for bin Laden, but why flat out lie about what happened for a day? I’m being polite and showing some deference to the enormity of actually taking him out by saying they are “confused.” They were sitting in a room, watching the helmet cam feed of what went down. It’s kind of hard to be “confused” about certain things. There’s a big difference – visually – between someone firing a gun behind a woman being used as a human shield and someone not firing a gun behind a woman being used as a human shield.
