Nelson County Sheriff Ed Mattingly seems quite relieved that the suspect his local law enforcement officers were forced to shoot last weekend is white because, otherwise, the media would have blown it out of proportion.
That’s the post-racial America we’re living in. While making what needs to be a split-second decision to defend their own lives, officers of the law have to take an extra split-second to wonder what the media is going to make of it.
MATTINGLY: We are glad that he is white, and we shouldn’t have to be worried about that. We do not want any backlash or violence in this community because people have been misinformed.
MATTINGLY: The media has not done a very good job of informing the public, and the public is not educated on how the system actually works. We don’t want those type of troubles in our community.
I’m not one of these conservatives who is a knee-jerk blanket supporter of law enforcement. I spent most of the 90s in South Jersey with long hair and a fast car, and I can tell you with certainty that a lot of cops are power-hungry jerk-offs who love to harass people just because they can. But what’s going on in the past year is nuts. It seems like it’s open season on cops, and whenever they try to defend themselves it’s an invitation to get a few free cell phones from the first store you see.
