TMZ reports that Sherman Hemsley, the actor who played George Jefferson first in All in The Family and then in its spin-off The Jeffersons, is dead.
No cause of death is reported for the actor, who was never married and had no children. Interestingly, Wikipedia reports that Hemsley was a fan of Progessive Rock bands like Yes, and collaborated with Yes founder Jon Anderson on an unreleased album in the mid-1990s.
Sources tell us … Hemsley was discovered by his nurse … who initially believed the actor was asleep. Once she realized something was wrong, she called for help.
Hemsley, who was 74, became famous during his appearances on “All in the Family.” The spin-off, “The Jeffersons” was a monster hit. He also starred in the TV show, “Amen.” He was also a professional singer and even released the single in 1989, “Ain’t that A Kick in the Head.”
